Decisions
Repair or replace?
A common rule of thumb: multiply the system's age by the repair cost. Under about 3,000, repair usually makes sense. Over about 5,000, replacement is worth a serious look. It's only a starting point. Safety, efficiency and how the rest of the system is holding up matter too.
Maintenance
Filters, explained
Check your filter monthly and replace it when it looks gray or clogged. Higher-rated filters capture more particles but can restrict airflow on systems that weren't designed for them. If you want better filtration, we'll check that your system can handle it.
Heat pumps
Heat pumps in winter
Steam and short defrost cycles are normal. An outdoor unit that stays caked in ice, or aux heat that never shuts off, is not. Both cost you money and are worth a call.
Cooling
Why AC coils freeze
Ice forms when the coil gets too cold, usually from low airflow (dirty filter, closed vents, dirty coil) or low refrigerant. Turn cooling off and run the fan to thaw it, then have it checked. Running a frozen system can damage the compressor.
Maintenance
Is maintenance worth it?
Seasonal tune-ups catch weak capacitors, dirty flame sensors and clogged drains before they leave you without heat or AC. They also give you a record of your system's condition. That's the idea behind Prestige Care.
